Lawsuit Filed Against Toyota Over Car Defects

Fox News -- SANTA ANA, Calif. -- The Orange County district attorney has filed a lawsuit against Toyota Motor Corp., accusing the automaker of knowingly selling hundreds of thousands of vehicles with acceleration defects.

District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said at a news conference Friday that his office has the right to bring consumer protective action on behalf of Orange County residents.

"We need to make sure that when Toyota says 'Oh, what a feeling' and 'Moving forward' that they are talking about great cars," Rackauckas said, referring to the company's slogans.

Toyota spokesman Mike Michels said he had no comment because the company hasn't been served with the lawsuit.

Orange County's lawsuit accuses Toyota of using deceptive business practices to become the world's top automaker. The suit se

Just like a rugby scrum - everybody's piling on. One hundred thousand Toyotas sold in Orange County? That's kind of stretching it!

I saw a Toyota hit a parking bumper today. Who does that driver sue?

In New York the story on air today is about how a Prius accelerated and then crashed into a stone wall. The stories keep coming and coming.

Yes, there may be an onslaught of future lawsuits and we must recognize maybe not all the accidents are mechanical but some may be driver error.

Thus it is good the "black box" which records the final few seconds before and after an accident can finally be deciphered. It will weed out those who are looking to place blame where it does not belong. It will also serve to place blame on Toyota if they are at fault.

I wonder if some folks who have real at-fault accidents will try to use Toyota problems to put the blame on them?

Oh what a feeling to drive, Toyota!! I remember that slogan well. Now many Toyota owners are getting an unsettling feeling when they drive their cars since they might become runaways.

I would still trust a Toyota over any GM POS.

Why isn't the GM power steering problem on the front page? Why aren't the lawyers going after them? I heard about this months ago, and it was in the news (on page 27) for about a day last week.

I've had a stuck accelerator before, on a Ford (actually stuck under the floor mat) but guess what, I didn't have to call 911 to help me shift it into neutral, switch off the engine, and steer onto a side street. I figured it out myself in about 2 seconds. Is there a problem with shifting a Prius into neutral? Sneakers55 hit the nail on the head, with remedial Driver's Ed.

It all smells of biased media to me. ALL the carmakers have problems, but the foreign makes get the most publicity. I suppose this makes up for years of Consumers Reports rating the japanese cars above the domestics.

Sneakers55: Well said, especially your last comment: "Any driver that doesn't know what to do in case of uncontrolled acceleration needs remedial Driver's Ed."

What to do in that case was one of the first defencive driving tactics I learned, namely what to do with a stuck throttle cable, and the vehicle won't slow down. Same solution to uncontrolled acceleration.

100% of lead toys are dangerous.

Over 99.99% of Toyotas work correctly.

That's a difference. A big difference.

And now we're getting allegations of fraudulent claims of uncontrolled acceleration. At least one of the drivers who called 911 and was told to shove the car in neutral wouldn't do it. Maybe it's time for some prosecution here, and NOT of Toyota.

Any driver that doesn't know what to do in case of uncontrolled acceleration needs remedial Driver's Ed.

The more I hear and read, am beginning to think that Toyota brought this on themselves. And if so, people have been killed, all be it some of to their own inability to properly handle a car, but an awful lot contribution to Toyota own doing.

I say sock it to them.
